SPOILERS!
Keep your eyes peeled for One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

Continuing from last time, the G5 Marines are mad at Brownbeard and the others for blowing a hole in their only defense against the deadly gas. They immediately patch up the hole. The environment around the lab begins to be encased and one of Caesar Clown's transponder snails stares intently. Brook uses his soul to check what has become of outside the lab. He is certain that they would've died if the hole wasn't closed. Zoro simply shrugs it off by saying "OK" but of course the Marines are annoyed and aim their guns at the pirates.

Back with Luffy and the others, Law tells Smoker and Tashigi not to get in their way. Nami calls out to Law and demands him to switch back her and Sanji's body. Law does so and Nami quickly figures out that Sanji must've stripped her body since shes wearing a different coat and promptly punches him...I knew this would happen.

Hindsight isn't kind to you Sanji

Law shouts to everyone in order to inform them that the only way to escape from the gas is to find a door with "R Building 66" written on it. They have only two hours to take care of business here. So the party splits up with Luffy rushing off to beat and kidnap Caesar, Kinemon and the Straw Hats to find and rescue his son as well as the other children, while Smoker and Tashigi also look for the children as well as the R-66 door. As if last week wasn't an indication enough, things are really starting to pick up in this arc.

While the G5s are eager to capture the Straw Hats, Smoker orders to Tashigi to lead the troops since Smoker wants to go after Vergo. Tashigi offers to go with him since Vergo is dangerous but Smoker needs her to protect the troops and help the children. I like this, it shows that Smoker does care about Tashigi in his own way.

Seriously, this page is a thing of beauty and awesomeness

Back with the Straw Hats, Usopp informs Zoro of Luffy's previous defeat by Caesar. This prompts Zoro to shout to Luffy that he needs to take this more seriously since the New World is truly beginning here. Luffy seems surprised at first but insures Zoro that he won't let his guard down anymore.  He runs into some of Caesar's guards and manages to avoid bullet fire. The chapter ends with Luffy counterattacking with a new move: Gum Gum UFO. Luffy's new attack makes Zoro seem perturbed and once again says to take this seriously.

This is another one of those "Setting up the big battle" chapters which are typically average in my opinion but this one was actually pretty good because everyone has been given a purpose. Again, this is showing Luffy's growth. Two years ago he probably wouldn't have listened and charged in without thinking of a strategy until much later on in the fight. Sure, he uses a silly attack to fight off the guards but maybe this is because Luffy will only take this seriously when he actually fights Caesar himself. He can't be using his big attacks just on anyone can he?

Another great piece of advice from Zoro

Not much development from anyone else, with the possible exception of Smoker's trust in Tashigi, but instead we did get a lot of funny moments. The chapter was very well drawn, especially that 3-way panel of each group running off to their own objectives. I don't really have any complaints about this one, it did feel fast to me but maybe its because the pacing was just that good. Looking forward to the big rematch with Luffy and Caesar, as well as Kinemon hopefully finding his son and any other fights that the Straw Hats or the G5 Marines get into.

Thats all I have to say about this chapter. Keep reading each week, because I've got a good feeling about how this arc will conclude. Remember, keep watching the skies...there may be a rubber boy up in the air...

Someone needs to draw Luffy doing this...IN SPAAAAAAACE

SPOILERS!
Take a dive into One Piece each week in SJAlpha!

We start this week's installment with Caesar Clown, cackling away because Punk Hazard has been completely covered in the Land of the Dead gas. He notices that theres no Marines or Straw Hats around. Vergo quickly determines that they must have escaped. He wants to go after Trafalgar Law and may even have to kill him depending on his intentions.

A soldier pops in and informs Caesar that Luffy and the others are moving deeper within the building. Our little spy, Chopper, takes the opportunity to duck out of the room with knowledge of the drug plus a sedative in his hooves. He tries to go somewhere else. By the way, Monet seems to have noticed Chopper but doesn't do or say anything. Did she write the note or is Chopper not worth her time? Hmm.

Chopper totally needs to be the next James Bond

Caesar thinks that the prisoners will try to escape the lab so he orders that the passage between Buildings A and B to be blocked. Not only that, but because the prisoners are in Building A, he orders the wall in there to be destroyed so that they'll succumb to the Land of the Dead gas. He even disregards the lives of his own guards just for the sake of showing his experiment to the brokers. Again, he's such an arse. Still can't wait until Luffy kicks his butt. Vergo says that he'll go after Law and Smoker because he'll also be in trouble if they escape.

Back in Building A, Luffy continues to kick down the guards in his way and reaches the passage between Buildings A and B which is starting to close.  Meanwhile, Zoro and the others cut down the G5 Marines because they're in the way. Zoro eventually gets blocked by Tashigi. This long awaited fight will have to wait because Tashigi makes getting the Building B a bigger priority. Some nice growth there, I was expecting Tashigi to go after Zoro without a doubt but her concern for her men is more important to her. As the gate continues to close, everyone picks up the pace to get through quickly. Outside, a cannon is fired at the wall so the gas starts to seep in.
Oda, you are spoiling us with these well drawn and AWESOME action scenes

The Straw Hats and some Marines manage to get through along with Tashigi who was thrown in. Tashigi tries to help the rest of her men but its too late since the gate is closed too tightly and the Mrines on the other side have already been petrified by the gas. They even give their captain the thumbs up which leaves Tashigi in tears. I've got to admit, this actually made me sad too. I was not on the verge of tears like Tashigi but still, you've got to admire their loyalty. The chapter ends with Caesar looking on and laughing once again because he won't allow anyone to escape.

Unfortunately this was another chapter where not a lot happened. I can still appreciate the awesome attack scenes with Luffy and Zoro's group as well as the development Tashigi managed to get, otherwise this chapter is another one of those that is just setting up for bigger stuff later. I only really liked the art in the brief attack scenes as well as that moment when the Straw Hats narrowly dive through the gate. Also, the ending was pretty emotional and the pacing was decent because it never felt like a chore while reading, but this was otherwise pretty average.

Man, poor Tashigi isn't getting a break is she?

I'm sure Oda has more up his sleeve for the eventual confrontations that our characters need to face like fights with Caesar and Vergo, finding Kinemon's son and hopefully more surprises. So I'm still hyped for the rest of the arc and I hope that the rest of you are as well. See you all next time!

Vergo's quirkiness is off the scale!

Summary
Jimbei is running away from Caribou's crew in order to keep them from reuniting.

Team Brownbeard is intercepted by a dragon.

Tashigi and the G5 Marines are attacked by Vergo. Sanji comes to Tashigi's aide.

Luffy and Smoker finds Caesar and Momet.

Thoughts

Let start off this review with something that I dislike: Tashigi getting beaten so easily by Vergo. I know that Oda just wants to show how powerful Vergo is but like that? Tashigi just swung at Vergo and he simply swatted at her as if she was a fly. It would have been better if Tashigi had swung and Vergo dodged it before knocking her down. That way it at least looked that Tashigi had a chance. Tashigi was able to handle New World pirates so that should be an indication of her strength.

Tashigi has always been unfortunate when it came to her battles such as with Robin back in Alabasta. Still, she had to improve during the last two years to at least be able to take a hit. The worst part is that it feels like Oda has been mistreating his female characters ever since Fishman Island. Note that Nami fought fodder characters and Robin didn't even fight a New Fishman Pirate Officer. Then you had Sanji come in and save Tashigi from Vergo's finishing blow. It just felt like another blow to Oda's female characters.

Nonetheless, a fight between Vergo and Sanji should prove to be interesting. Both characters have a good grasp of the CP9's Six Powers. The interesting thing to note is that Vergo has armament abilities similar to Luffy. If that is true then it would mean that this is a common ability of those who use Armament Haki. We have seen how Luffy has incorporated Armament Haki with his abilities. Let see how the Marines incorporate it with their techniques. A mixture of two styles into one.

It is interesting to note how Oda wrote the G5 men's response to Vergo's betrayal. They do not believe that this is the Vergo that defended them and it could be felt in their words. Could this be foreshadowing that Vergo will return to G5 with his rank intact and with Smoker not revealing Vergo's true colors. It would put Vergo into an interesting bind with Smoker watching his every move and being around the idiotic G5 men.

On the other side of the lab, you have Luffy and Smoker confronting Caesar and Momet. The more we go into this arc, the more see Caesar unraveling. He tries desperately to look as if he he has control. Caesar goes as far as to put Vergo at risk. He may be a weapon genius but he is not a logistic genius.

Will Caesar fall like the great Julius Caesar will he actually pull something off? Momet must be looking from the side and wondering what Caesar is thinking based on what he has done so far. I won't be surprise if he decided to flood the whole complex with Land of the Dead just to kill Luffy. This is the second time that Luffy was able to land a surprise hit on Caesar in the arc. Caesar won't like that.

Everybody is trying to run away from something. You have a dragon running away from Vergo. G5 men running away from Vergo. Straw Hats running away from deadly gas. Let see if Caesar is going to try to run away from Luffy's fist.

Until next time true believers!

Whatever happen to One Piece More?

It was taking a break.

Things have been busy and slow in a way. It has been mostly slow. Still, in an attempt to pick things up, we are going to bring back More. What is More you ask? It just a way to talk about random things that may or may not involve One Piece. After all, sometimes we all want one piece more.

What is Princess Jellyfish?
A great series.

Comedy is something that I look for when I am watching a series. I love things that can make me laugh and keep my interest. Princess Jellyfish did that to me. It had everything I like from traps to a touching story.

I have heard about the series from different anime podcasts and wanted to give the show a watch. Fortunate for me, my anime club was showing it this semester. After watching three episodes, I had to buy the series and watch it dub. A sick day later and I found myself finishing this eleven episode series.

It is a cute show that has an opening filled with pop culture references. If you have some time then I recommend that you give Princess Jellyfish a shot. If you have heard people say that this kind of anime isn't made anymore then they are right. Not as after as it should be. It has a bit more mature story that doesn't involve a high school boy meets high school girl with boobs everywhere. It features adults and geeks in a realistic setting. So if you want something different to watch then here is your different.

You play the Pokemon TCG?

Yes.

Another thing that has been taking up my time is the Pokemon Trading Card Game. You would be surprise at how organize it is. Also, how cheap it is to play compare to other TCGs. I use to collect the cards as a kid but got to start playing a year ago. That is a story you will hear from many other current Pokemon TCG players my age recite. I guess with the card game starting afresh and people having money and transportation, it makes it easier to get into the game.

Currently I am looking forward to the Regional tournament that is happening next weekend. The last time I went to one, I didn't do so well and had to leave early. I am hoping that this time I can do better and stay for the whole thing.

How do you feel about Season 5 and Strong World being picked up?

Excited.

Season 5 has one of my favorite moments in the series. It also happens to be the only arc that I have not watched in it's entirely. So getting the chance to watch it for the first time as the dub will be a real treat for me.

Strong World is just icing on the cake. That is something else that I have not watched. I was simply waiting for that to be picked up and dubbed. It is going to be fun to see who will be cast as Brook. Funimation is going have to pull out their A-list actors to pull off Brook's spirit which was spotlighted in this movie.

Where are the anime reviews?
On vacation.

Fishman Island is bad. It was bad in the manga and that is carrying over into the anime. The one-chapter-per-episode format isn't working for an arc that dragged it's feet. It even has lackluster villains. If the anime had sped up the pace then maybe it would have been better.

Hopefully this will change for the next arc. I know that Sora and I are excited about it.

I hope you enjoy this little fun format for this More segment. It is something and easy to read. I hope it address some of the things that have been going on site side and hopefully we can have more of these. We do have some good things planned for the future so keep an eye out and keep reading.

Missing HOOP: Where the heck is the new episode?

Hello everyone. Some of you have probably been wondering: "Where the heck is the new History Of One Piece?"

It has almost been an entire month since the last episode and that is poor form on my part considering that this used to be a weekly show. Well, October has been the busiest month of my life and it is still not over. I have been working three jobs, planning a movie with several internet personalities and Jon St. John, trying to finish my final semester of college, and juggling three other review shows. Still, that is no excuse. I need to manage my time a bit better and here is what I have been doing. During two of my jobs, I have a lot of free time to just script and that is what I have done. I have used this time to script the new HOOP and the new Anime Observations on GTO. Both of those scripts are finalized and ready to be recorded on Monday or Wednesday (my only days off). I have started work on another HOOP script that will conclude the Captain Morgan arc and I will post both HOOP videos as a double feature next week. Again, I apologize for all of this delay and I should be back to a normal schedule once October is over because then I will have only 1 job to worry about. So, next week, two new HOOP releases and Anime Observations. The week after, we move onto the Captain Buggy arc recap which will be covered in only 2 videos (I promise). Thanks again and thank you for watching! -Zenithwillrule

Summary
Caribou is delivered to the G5 Marine Base. (Cover story)

Law arrived to where the SAD is located.

Vergo contacts Doflamingo concerning Law.

Sanji joins with Tashigi and the G5 Soldiers.

Brook, Kitemon, Nami and Usopp defeat a dragon.

Chopper enters Monster Point to subdue the experimented children.

Thoughts
 Required Law image for review

An interesting  chapter of One Piece this time around. First off, you have Jimbei dropping off Caribou on the doorstep of G5. It looks as if we are going to see the infamous barbaric ways of G5. If you look in the background, you can see that they are preparing the fire already for Caribou.

I wonder if that chain around Caribou's neck is made out of Seaprism Stone. That would explain why he hasn't escaped.

Not Sabo

Moving on to the chapter, whatever Law has planned has Doflamingo concern. Law did say that he wanted to change the New World. Was that a hint at how much control Doflamingo has within the New World? We only saw a little of Doflamingo's influence back in Paradise. (First half of the Grand Line) This could mean that he has greater influence in the New World. If Law and Luffy succeed in this plan then Doflamingo may end up taking a heavy blow. This would put the Joker in a position that we have never seen from him before. Doflamingo was a dark character before but he could show us darker shades as the story progresses. Doflamingo maybe in the black market for the laughs but he still has to worry about profits.

All Law needs is to get Caesar in the same room as him. Either Luffy will do that or Caesar may end up going there himself. Once that happens, Law can set his plan into motion. There must be a reasonable chance of that happen which is why Doflamingo is taking measurements to make sure that doesn't happen.

This chapter did introduce several characters but I would like to focus on the maid assassin, Baby 5. She has the ability to product weapons from her body. That ability is too interesting to belong to some side character. Baby 5 also has personal history with Doflamingo which would be worth visiting later on in the future. Doflamingo has the means to control her so he may enjoy having her on his strings even though it comes at the risk of his personal well being. Even if Baby 5 does go on a rampage we saw that Doflamingo has a fully capable crew that can deal with her.

This scene at Dressrosa reminds me of the scene where Kuma and Moria first met at Thriller Bark. It gives you the ominous feeling that this will affect the nearby future. I bet we will get too excited adn forget about this scene as the arc progress and won't see Baby 5 and Buffalo until the end of the arc. Then we will all be left amazed at what they do. All of this just because we put this scene in the back of our minds.

The last few things I want to focus on are the kids and Chopper. What has Caesar done to them that forced Chopper to use a Rumble Ball? If you take a look at the last page, you can see Chopper is bleeding from his head. It is hard to tell if he is in control of the form as well. This would make it similar to prior the time skip when Chopper would lose control of his forms after eating two Rumble Balls right after another. These kids are not to be taken lightly especially if they forced Chopper into doing this.

Then the biggest reveal is the possibility that the dragons are actually the kidnapped children. This is eerily familiar to what you can find in the early part of Fullmetal Alchemist. Not much can be said on this topic but if it is true then this arc will be taking a much darker tone.

There is also the fact that the Straw Hats may have actually beat up an innocent kid when fighting that dragon.

A lot of things happen in this chapter and all over the world. It also made the chapter feel as if it was much shorter then the normal chapter. To make matters worst, there is no chapter this week. So the  major revelation about the Dragons and the experimented kids won't get resolved until two weeks after this chapter first appeared. That was a pretty major reveal that could affect many things involving the Straw Hats' and their friends.

Now I can go back to playing Pokemon Black 2. Until next time true believer!

SPOILERS!
Now now kids, theres plenty of One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

Continuing from last week, one of the captured children revealed to a guard that Momonosuke (Kinemon's son) had sneaked into the "Secret Room" and had turned into a dragon. She's worried that he isn't eating, but the guards ensure that he's fine and tell her to keep the incident to herself. In Block C of the lab, Luffy is encased in a ten-layered snow hut by Monet. Luffy is confident that he'll break through but Monet grabs Luffy so she can weaken him with her ability. This nearly works but Luffy breaks a hole through the floor by using Gum Gum Jet Spear...and promptly falls down into the basement full of garbage. Oh Luffy, you still have a lot to learn.
See you next FALL!...I'll go hit myself

In Block B, Chopper enters Monster Point to try and prevent the giant children from entering the Biscuit Room. This isn't successful because he doesn't want to hurt them. This then leads to Chopper getting beaten up by the berserk kids. The time on his Rumble Ball effect runs out and all hope seems lost, but Nami and her group come to the rescue. Robin uses her powers to block the kids from the Biscuit Room but they attack her hands. Chopper reveals that he had befriended a girl called Mocha. She is suppose to protect the candy and convince the other kids to stop, but their addiction overpowers them and Mocha tries to run. Monet arrives and tells Mocha to share the candy.

*Cues Ride of the Valkyries*

Meanwhile in Block D, Trafalgar Law continues his fight against Vergo and uses his Op Op powers to retrieve his heart. But Vergo lands a hit on Law and gets the heart back, even crushing it a little and knocking Law's hat off (oh, so many fangirls who squee'd over seeing Law's hair). Law uses Counter Shock to electrify Vergo but it didn't work. Vergo delivers Joker's message to Law and continues to torture him by squeezing his heart. The chapter ends with Smoker showing up and the two having a quick exchange before preparing to fight.
*puts on sunglasses* Deal with it

This was another good chapter. Theres action from all of the groups within the lab, more well drawn panels and dangers for practically everyone involved. It also felt fast as well which helped the pacing a lot. I don't really have any complaints, except for where the hell Franky is but thats a nitpick.

Hopefully we should get some more insight on Momonosuke being a dragon as well as if he really was the dragon that Kinemon and Brook attacked and possibly killed. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of these fights and more revelations as this arc continues. See you all until the next review!

Summary
Caribou Pirates fight against the G5 Marines while Caribou is being burn at the stake.

Smoker challengers Vergo.

Sanji, Tashigi and the G5 attempts to escape from the Land of the Dead that enter the compound.

Ceasar sets to motion a plan to trap the Straw Hats and allies within Structure R.

Luffy finds a dragon in the Trash Dump.

Thoughts

This chapter showed new sides for some old characters while went into details to others. We saw that Smoker cares for his men to the point where he is willing to fight for them. It is rather similar to how Luffy fights for his crew. During his confrontation with Vergo, I was feeling a Luffy vibe from what Smoker was saying. Maybe Smoker and Luffy are not as different as we think they are.

Law though doesn't look as if he approves of Smoker being there. He originally told Smoker to not fight Vergo. Amazing how Law's life is now Smoker's hands. Looking back at it, it looked as if that was foreshadowing this confrontation.

Then you have Caesar rallying up this troops and lying to them. If was obvious that he was lying but you couldn't rule out that maybe he was telling the truth that it was actually Vegapunk. This could come back to bite Caesar in the butt if the troops ever find out the truth about the incident.

A lot can be pulled out from that flashback. One of those things is that Caesar has no problem experimenting on kids. That explains why he has kids in the lab. It could go to even worse degrees seeing that Vegapunk has been covering for any actions Caesars may have done. Coming from the same conversation, it would look as if Vegapunk has found success in his growth experiments based on the Pacifistas. Vegapunk even went beyond by possibly figuring out plastic surgery.

If you compare the two scientist, Vegapunk's inventions could be consider futuristic while Caesar's are rather barbaric. Caesar likes to develop weapons that are unable to pick and choose it's targets. Vegapunk is basically working on what all world leaders want: A way to fight enemies without killing innocents. He has succeed to some degree as we have seen so far. Caesar simply refuses to see pass that and adopt with the World Government's way of thinking.

Meanwhile, Luffy is stuck inside a snake once againbetween two buildingslost in a forest in a trash pit. I guess some things never change. Maybe this dragon will be his key out of his current location. At least he is safe from the poison for the time being.

Until next time true believers.

SPOILERS!
Halloween may be over but you can still treat yourself to One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

Continuing from the last chapter, Luffy had finally come across Kinemon's son Momonosuke who has become a dragon. It takes Luffy a second to actually realize that a dragon is talking to him. He should be used to weird stuff like this but this is Luffy after all. Although, Momonosuke doesn't know how he became a dragon or the true nature of the island, he tells Luffy how he actually arrived. He smuggled onto a boat due to "unavoidable circumstances" (a fight with his dad maybe?) and even talked about how kind the children were to him despite that he kept to himself to uphold his pride as a samurai. (By the way, Momonosuke is silhouetted in the flashback, kinda weird but okay). No matter what kind of food was offered to him (including the drug candy) he declined it and eventually escaped Caesar Clown's guards.

He couldn't handle the hunger anymore and came across the Secret Room where he found a Devil Fruit inside of a container. He chows down on it when a girl discovered him and talked about how she wanted to go home but loved the Biscuit Room too much. The guards find the two children and Momonosuke's Devil Fruit powers activate and he becomes the dragon. He escapes and the guards discover the missing artificial Devil Fruits which was a failed experiment. Whether that means Momonosuke can't turn back into a human or not, we'll just have to see.

I could go for some dragon eels right now

Luffy looks around the garbage room that they are in and can't see a way out. Momonosuke wants to leave so he can inform the children of Caesar's true intentions. He recounts that Caesar explained to his guards that although the gigantism of the kids was successful, there are limitations the candy drug puts on their bodies and that they'll die in 5 years. Again, he's an insane creep and I hope he gets whats coming to him.

Momonosuke explains that he got stuck here while searching for the kids to warn them and Luffy looks really angry. Luffy says that they'll climb the walls to get out and that the kids will be fine because his crew will help them out. Momonosuke starts to lose consciousness due to hunger but he gets startled by seeing a hallucination of Joker AKA Doflamingo...interesting. He flips out and starts flying out of the garbage room with Luffy grabbing on.

There you go, one post-Halloween scare

Usopp, Brook and Kinemon are on the lookout for Sea Prism Stone handcuffs (at the request of Robin) and Momonosuke. While this is going on, Smoker continues his fight with Vergo and Tashigi, Sanji and the rest of the G5 marines continue their escape from the deadly gas. In the Biscuit Room Nami and Chopper encourage Mocha to keep running so the children don't take the candy from her. Robin tries using her powers to slow the kids down again but Monet stabs her through the shoulder. The chapter ends with Zoro staying behind to fight Monet while the others slow the kids down.

Oh no you di'nt!

There was quite a lot to take in with this chapter. Don't get me wrong, I like seeing the fights and chasing going on from all of the groups involved but it felt a bit too much for me. Especially when a couple of them were only a few panels long. Despite this though, it was nice to get some insight on Momonosuke but theres still more we need to know like why he sneaked aboard the boat leading to Punk Hazard in the first place or whether this failed Devil Fruit leaves him a dragon for life. There are still pieces of the puzzle that are needed but things are very slowly becoming full circle regardless.

This was exciting though regardless of my complaint. They say too much of a good thing is bad, but I'm willing to make exceptions. I'll be looking forward to the next installment and I'm sure you all are too. So thank you all for reading and good night!

Fooled you! Two post-Halloween scares!

Summary
Caribou is rescue from the flames by his little brother.

Zoro and Momet clash in the Biscuit Room.Tashigi joins the battle.

Chopper, Nami, Robin, Sanji, and the G5 men chase after the children.

Thoughts

This chapter was all about Zoro and Momet fighting. Though, it did brought up some interesting idea such as Zoro being unable to completely control Armament Haki like everybody thought he may have.

"I can't help but notice that you only defend, never attack."
-Momet

That is an interesting observation from Momet. Zoro didn't launch a single attack but instead choose to defend throughout their battle so far. This would suggest that Zoro has Observation Haki or has not master Armament Haki. If Zoro isn't as skilled in Armament Haki, then it was a very noble feat of him to stall in order to give Nami and the others the chance to run away. During the battle, he did show signs of having Observation Haki such as following Momet as she travel though the snow.

If Zoro only has Observation Haki then it would be ironic for the swordsman who is always lost. He has the ability to sense people but lack the sense of direction to find them.

It is Tashigi's turn to shine...Or not.

Good thing Tashigi has arrived and is armed Armament Haki. Maybe this will finally be her time to shine. She keeps trying as in back in Alabasta and recently in this arc but never succeeds. Hopefully the third time will be the charm. Then again, maybe she will simply be used to help Zoro master Armament Haki. That is is trend with female characters since the timeskip holds true.

I do have mix feelings about Nami not battling Momet. It looks like a repeat of the Mermaid Island arc where Zoro had came to the rescue of Robin but this time in reverse. I would love to have Nami show off her new Sorcery Clima-Tact. Nami's way of battling is always interesting to watch but she hasn't been given the chance to show it off to the fullest. Then again, none of the Straw Hats have except for Luffy.

It will be interesting to see the battle between Zoro, Tashigi and Momet will play out. If Zoro doesn't or hasn't master Armament Haki then that would leave it to Tashigi to do most of the attacking. This will be the chance to see Tashigi's fighting style while seeing how Zoro has improved in the last two years.

Until next time true believers!

SPOILERS!

Don't hold back your urges! Read One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

We're kicking off this week with Sanji as he continues to reach the other Straw Hats with the G5 Marines. He states to one of his soldiers that while he welcomes death by a woman due to his chivalrous nature, that Zoro isn't so forgiving. He also believes that Tashigi is in capable hands as long as Zoro is there, I like these moments when Zoro or Sanji respect and trust each other even if they would never admit it.

Back in the Biscuit Room, Zoro and Tashigi continue to bicker because Tashigi believes that Zoro would never kill a woman which is the reason why she stayed behind. Zoro smirks and allows her to attack Monet because all he has to do is not let Monet leave. Speaking of which, Monet (who is looking super creepy right now) attacks Tashigi using her Snow Snow powers and even manages to avoid Tashigi's haki counterattacks since she is so fast. Although Tashigi manages to keep on the defense for a bit, she eventually gets bitten by Monet.

Love subtle moments like these

Tashigi grabs onto Monet so that her shoulder isn't bitten off but Monet continues to bite deeper. Zoro saves Tashigi because he got tired of waiting and even warns Monet not to let her guard down around him. While he does admit that he won't slice certain things, but when you come across a beast then there is no guarantee that  it won't attack you. Zoro draws his sword and runs towards Monet who can't seem to move, then Zoro cuts her in half...yes REALLY.

Zoro badass moment number: 2109817...maybe

Unfortunately, Monet survived due to her snow powers but only manages to pull half of herself together. The chapter ends with Monet preparing to stab Zoro while his back is turned, but Tashigi intervenes and finishing Monet off.

You go girl!

I know this is a pretty short review, but its because this is one of those chapters where you just adore the action drawn in the panels. It was a great fight, with great moments for both Zoro and Tashigi. Oda also did draw the flashback of Zoro and Tashigi in this chapter showing the beginning of their "rivalship" in Logue Town and yet it still makes me ask what kind of relationship these two are going to have since nothing much has come of it since then. I'm sure something will come of it someday, it just makes me wonder.

So in short, nothing much to say but enjoy the action. Hopefully we'll see what the others are up to next time. So cheerio until then!

What a strangely adorable attack

Summary
Coribou ends up abandoning his ship due to a storm. (Cover Story)

Zoro and Tashigi run away from Land of the Dead.

Mocha eats the Candy in order to keep it away from the other kids.

Sanji and the G5 Marines join up with Chopper, Nami and Robin's group. Together they began to subdue the children.

Luffy and Momonosuke escape from the snake dust box.

Thoughts

This Coribou cover story has been enjoyable to follow. This must be retribution for his lackluster performance during the Fishman Island arc. It is good to see that Coribou is getting his just deserts after leaving his crew behind back at G5. Still, I am interested to see where he will end up at the end of this story.

Another thing that I am liking is that we are sticking to a single scene and letting it play out before moving on to the next. I have always dislike only seeing a glimpse of a scene then quickly moving to another. Oda was doing a lot of that prior to the Zoro and Tashigi verses Momet battle. When Oda does that, nothing gets done and it feels as if the story didn't move at all.

Now to the chapter.

It is rare that we get Chopper heavy moments but when we do, they hit hard. The build up to this moment has been nicely done It should have been obvious that Mocha was going to swallow the Candy but still a surprise to see. You could have felt the sense of dread as everybody watched Mocha put the candy in her mouth. You knew she was going to do something but couldn't be sure if it will end well for her.

The flashback to the promise the children made added more depth to the moment. It gave meaning to Mocha's actions while also added an emotional element to it. Prior to the Candy, all of these kids were normal and happy. Now they are ravage addicts waiting for their next fix. It is great way to reminds us of how different the children were prior their introduction in the story.

I am unsure how I want this Mocha situation to play out. If she dies, then that will make this moment even more meaningful. This holds true especially to Chopper who hasn't have a powerful moment since Thriller Bark. Still, if this does happen then it would blow that moment out of the water. On the other hands, Oda wouldn't kill a child. Would he? That is pretty extreme thing to do.

Also, it looks like Oda is trying to reserve his deaths for big moments seeing that he hasn't killed off anybody in the current timeline since the Marineford Arc. He had his chances to kill off characters such as Coribou's crew and the New Fishman Pirates but hasn't. This type of behavior is something Oda has done since the beginning of One Piece. Still, the thought of killing off Mocha is always there in our minds.

Finally, we have Luffy. I am glad that we didn't waste precious panels in the last few chapters with Momonosuke and him escaping the Dust Box. That would have felt too similar to his time in the snake back in Skypeia or any other similar moments. Now that the rest of the character's scenes have played though, we can see some Luffy action.

Or find out what Franky is doing. There is also a fight between Law and Smoker against Vergo. I wouldn't mind getting back to that.

Still, until next time true believers!

Yeah. I wouldn't trust anybody looking like this with a needle.

SPOILERS!
Bored? Don't worry! One Piece will save you each week on SJAlpha!
This week starts off with Brownbeard (who is a floor below Caesar) trying to warn the Punk Hazard soldiers of Caesar Clown's true colours. Caesar heads down to confront the expirate. Brownbeard demands the return of his men since they should've come back alive after being chased earlier. In a flashback, we see more of Caesar's douchebaggery by showing that he received an emergency call from Brownbeard's men because the entrance was closed off and the Land of Death is approaching them.

Caesar outright lies to them saying that he'll come up with something and hangs up but in reality intends to leave them to die. Back in the present, Caesar continues his lie by saying they never contacted him and that he has been worried about them. Brownbeard isn't having any of this though and tries to warn the soldiers that they're all just guinea pigs to Caesar, he suddenly starts spewing out gibberish.

Seriously, I just about went Hulk when this happened

Turns out that Caesar secretly injected a muscle relaxant into Brownbeard so he can't speak or stand properly. I'm actually getting really angry at him now. To grit my teeth even more, he even whispers to Brownbeard how he lied about not only "discarding" his subordinates but how he also caused the chemical explosion from four years ago, not Vegapunk. Naturally Brownbeard flails his sword around and while he doesn't hurt Caesar, he pretends to get hurt and acts like a coward. Brownbeard's anger and gibberish continues while his inner self still tries to warn the soldiers, but he appears nuts to them.

The coward orders the soldiers to shoot Brownbeard and they do so as he cries out in pain while Caesar laughs.

Okay, something needs to be done. I've had enough of this guy, someone needs to just teach him a lesson.

Caesar tries to finish him off, but a giant black fist appears and attacks Caesar...Have my prayers been answered? Well not quite as the attack only grazes him but that's right guys, Luffy has reappeared and looks ready to take Caesar down...my hero.

Caesar the coward (yes I'm calling him that from now on), tells the soldiers to retreat and set everything up for both the experiment and the broadcast. Luffy demands to know what the heck is up with this island and Caesar explains that the island doesn't really exist to most people because its pretty much the scientific underworld where many people die due to dangerous experiments with no repercussions because Vergo is practically his shield.

Anyone else getting a Snow White or Adam and Eve vibe?

He also tells Luffy that because he knows nothing about the island that everything he has done including the alliance with Law will have been totally pointless. He goes into detail about why Law wants to kidnap him because he is the only one who knows how to create the SAD substance and  the factory belongs to Doflamingo to mass produce Smile fruits. It turns out that Smile is an artificial Zoan Devil Fruit and Doflamingo is using these to cause more mayhem and chaos by adding new dangerous ability users to the New World. Scary. Theres even a rumor that one of the Four Emperors is using Smile to create an entire army of Zoan users (it could be any of the Emperors except for Shanks of course).

Because Luffy is sticking his nose in this business, Caesar claims that there is no way he could take on people as powerful as Doflamingo at his current level. Caesar laughs because he's confident that Luffy won't lay a finger on him while these powerful beings are behind his back. The chapter ends with a HUGE smile on my face as Luffy DECKS Caesar in the face while saying that hes been taking on guys like that since the very beginning.

I just...love it

Okay. WOW. This was definitely one of the best moments of the arc, it was speaking to me because  Caesar is really getting on my nerves and I just want Luffy to beat the everliving hell out of him and end his grandiose yet heartless plans. Thats really all I can say about it, it got my blood boiling throughout the whole thing and it paid off spectacularly.

I'm sure I'll be even more satisfied once he is beaten for good though, so I'll enjoy the action going on for the next few weeks. Of course, theres also the matters of dealing with Vergo, Mocha plus the other children and Kinemon and Momonosuke's subplot but lets take a bit at a time. Hopefully the satisfaction will continue as the fight is starting to near the end so look forward to that over the next few chapters. Until then, have fun and goodbye!

I hope he gets a nosebleed next time he does this

Interview Piece: Clint Bickham (Part 2 + Bonus)

We finally conclude our interview with Clint Bickham, scriptwriter for Funimation's One Piece. He is not only a writer for the series but a huge fan.

In this part of the interview, we talk about the scriptwriting process for One Piece. We even talk about some of Clint's favorite parts in the upcoming season of One Piece.

Things to note: This interview was taken during the April of 2012. So some things may be out of date. You can read the first part of this interview here.

MS: Which shows do you find enjoyable to work on?

CB: Which series?

MS: Yeah. Which series do you find enjoyable to write or work on?

CB: Hmm…You know, I have enjoyed every single series I have worked on in different degrees. I can’t really think of a series that I have worked on that I really hated. I did Air Gear a couple of years ago and that was fun because it had a lot of profanity. So I could just write anything and I focus on writing modern sounding slang.

So when I can take a direction like that then that’s fun but I really really really love working on One Piece even though the lipflaps are kind of frustrating but I love these characters. I spent hours and hours and hours with them and I can really feel like what Luffy would say here or something. And I can think about other characters across so many episodes and so many manga chapters and I have so much to pull from that sometimes I can write a line, you know that is not much different from the Japanese, but more entertaining or reference something.

I can feel “I really channel the character” there or something. I don’t remember but there one from Nami where she was just fed up and she had complained so many times. I think I eventually just wrote, “Why am I just so smart and you so dumb.”

(Laughter)

And that really made me laugh. It is really great to be able to write something and feel like you can hear the character saying it and if I can make myself laugh then I am, “That’s it! That’s the line!”

MS: That is the perfect line right there.  How much do you worry about lip flaps when you writing the scripts?

CB: I have to worry about it a whole lot. It differs with director to director. The older dubs I work on before I worked with Funimation, they were usually a little bit more lax on it just as long the person talking, their lips have to be flapping and they have to be talking. The shape of their lips didn’t matter but Funimation is very precise on a lot of shows.

If a character’s mouth never closes at an end of a line then you have to do a vowel sound because your lips will close for a vowel sound. That was very hard to get use to and it is very difficult. With One Piece, the flaps are so mess up that Mike (McFarland) has decided to rather than break his back and make the lines sound more natural matching the sometimes unnatural flap to just worry about writing the line the best that you can.

MS: So, you guys write it to the best that you can and it works?

CB: Yeah. Occasionally, they’ll have animation mistakes. I’ve play a very small role in it and in one scene my character’s lips were not flapping at all. Their mouth was just like a circle and me and Mike were joking, “Well, the accurate thing to say would be ‘WOOOOO!’”

“Well, no. I have to say something. I just can’t do that.” So you have to try to match the flaps but you can’t be married to them too closely or you would be shooting yourself in the foot.

MS: Okay. I am going to try to rush though these last few questions because we are going pass ten minutes. What future characters of the series would you like to voice if you could?

CB: Oh gosh! Okay. I am going to get myself in trouble for this. Umm, I do not want to shoot for as high as I can because I know I be, “Oh! I would love to be Brook” because he is the last crew member. But, if I had to pick, probably Duval.

MS: (Laugther)

CB: I really, really like him. He has the best catchphrase. He is so great. I have a Duval keychain. I can’t believe they made one but I was like, “Duval! They have them!”

MS: I have seen that keychain before.

CB: It is hideous!

MS: Yeah. It is hideous. It is a horrible, ugly looking but it is fun to look at.

CB: You know, Chopper is probably my favorite crewmember but my favorite noncrewmember has got to be Duval. He is so great.

MS: Who is your inspiration? Who has inspired you to be where you are today?

CB: Who inspired me? It is hard for me to say exactly where I am today. (Laughter) I can’t say anyone in particular inspired me as a writer because an ADR Writer is such a strange and narrow field. As an actor, I guess as growing up, the first voice actor that I knew by name was Michael Donovan. He did Conan the Adventurer. I was big into that as a kid and I started to recognize that he was in a lot of, if not, ton of shows. That was the first name that I recognize and made me think of voice acting as a profession.

I was like, “Wow! I would love to do that!” and that was before I was really into anime. So, I always say to people who are fans who want to get into it because they are fans, “You have to be an actor first. You have to be interested in acting.”

MS: As you said earlier, “You have to be a professional first and then be a fan.”

CB: Right. So, I guess I don’t have anyone. Still, that is the first name that comes to mind.

MS: Okay. My last question. What should the fans expect from the upcoming season?

CB: You mean?

MS: Season Four. Water Seven. Foxy.

CB: Okay. We did Foxy. Man that went on for a long time. That was one of my favorite parts in the manga and they added stuff in the anime. Some of it was actually really good. I was really surprise. Sometimes when they do filler episodes, the animation quality will drop a little bit but I felt that the writing quality was actually pretty solid the whole time. A lot of the stuff the added was really good.

The Davy Back Fight is a great thing and it kind of its own little story. I feel like it will get people back into it that hasn’t seen it in a while. Water Seven, in my opinion, is the first really phenomenal arc. So people who haven’t seen that, it is going to blow you away. I think there will be some real- You know, if you are asking what people should expect then maybe I shouldn’t do any spoilers.

MS: Most people who are going to read this already know what will happen in Water Seven. Still, try to-

CB: Oh, yeah. Well, the part with Usopp is very emotional and people don’t expect that from him. So that is big.

MS: That is one of my favorite parts of the series.

CB: Yeah. That is the episode I am writing now. That is really, really exciting. You get a lot more from Robin. The villains are really great. New crewmember. It is really one of the strongest arcs in the whole series.

I went back and read the whole arc again. I was like, “I just read a little bit at a time to try and refamiliarize myself with it.” And literally, it is like ten or fifteen books, and I read the whole thing in one sitting. It is just so exciting. It had brought me to tears again. That was really like, “This is still so good!”

MS: Was that during the (Going) Merry thing?

CB: Yeah. That was really intense. It was really unexpected too.

MS: Well, thank you for having this interview with me. I hope that the con goes great for you.

I hope you enjoy this interview with Clink Binkham and gave you an insight on the scriptwriting process at Funimation.

Still, I do have a bonus where Clint raves about One Piece: Pirate Warriors. We went on for a good while after the interview concerning the game so I share a little bit about what we talked about.

BONUS

CB: Final note! If you are a One Piece fan and you don’t have Pirates Warriors. Go get it. Get it. Get it. It is so good!

MS: I wish I had a PS3.

CB: It is totally worth it! I was a little iffy about it because it didn’t have Thriller Bark and that was a big downside to it because it was one of my favorite arcs.

MS: And that is when Brook comes in. I heard they work around it.

CB: Yeah. Well, the way that Brook is in it. Well, you don’t have to record this.

MS: I just throw this in as an extra.

CB: Okay. The way they do the game is that it starts late. After the Time Skip when everybody is meeting together. Then it is the crew on the Thousand Sunny and they are talking to Brook about everything that has happen before. So the game plays out as a flashback with them explaining it to Brook. The thing that is kind of sad about it is when they get to where Thriller Bark would be, Brook is like, “What about my story?” And they are like, “Nobody cares.”

MS: So they bluntly say out loud that nobody cares.

CB: Yeah. They kind of do. They kind of blow it over.

MS: That is sad. I know that Thriller Bark gets a lot of flak from the fans. I actually like Thriller Bark. It is a nice and interesting little arc.

CB: I think the reason why they didn’t do it was because of the budget would have been just insane. They can recycle Marines and thugs for all the other levels. But they would have to render all these new zombies and some of the fights like with Oars. How would they pull it off?

MS: Yeah. That would kill the engine.

Summary
Coribou awakens in a bed next to an old lady. (Cover story)

Luffy punches Caesar for the second time.

Usopp finds himself surrounded by Caesar's men on the second floor of Structure R.

Team Zoro, Team Nami and Team Brook are running from Land of the Dead.

Law retrieves his heart with the help of Smoker and slices Vergo along with SAD and the complex.

Thoughts

It is nice to have a reminder that Caesar is a despicable guy. It was obvious that he was going to try to lure Luffy into a false sense of security with his offer. It is just amazing that he actually tried to plead with Luffy. Good thing you can expect Luffy to make the right decision and punch Caesar in the face again. It also was a great way to set up for the main course of the chapter.

The teamwork between Smoker and Law was done nicely in a way you were not expecting. You would have expected them to team up and actively fight against Vergo but instead it was Smoker doing all of the fighting. It sounded like a perplexing battle as Smoker was doing all the wrong moves based on what Vergo was saying.

Sexy!

This battle also told us that there is a certain way that a Logia users should battle when facing somebody who is skilled with Armament Haki. That is something wroth taking from this chapter.

Though, the biggest things to take from this chapter was Law's speech to Doflamingo. It is another reminder that Whitebeard's age of pirates is coming to a close while a new one is starting.  Law went as far to display that with his power by slicing up not only Vergo but the complex as a whole along with the SAD tankers.

Law may have a point. In the last two years, the old guard of pirates may have spent the time not improving or locked in a war with each other. While they were doing that, the young guard of pirates were becoming stronger and developing themselves to make a name of themselves. This must be how the Roger Era began. A group of upstart pirates each wanting to make a name for themselves and break the current authority. It just that this time Doflamingo is that authority and he just got a rude awakening by Law.

 Mr. Anderson....

Is this the end of this battle? Or will Vergo pull himself back together? What about Usopp? As awesome that this chapter was, we are far from a solid ending.

Until next time true believers!

Review Piece: Tokyo Godfathers (Secret Santa)

$

0

Two years ago, I reviewed Paprika by the late Satoshi Kon for fellow anime blog Reverse Thieves' annual Secret Santa event, so here's my review of another Kon movie. Check out what I thought after the jump.

Why Tokyo Godfathers?
There were two main reasons why I decided to choose Tokyo Godfathers as my Secret Santa review this year. First, the fact that this is a Christmas movie (sort of) so it was appropriate for this time. Second, two years after I said I would, I still haven't seen much of Kon's works besides Paprika and Paranoia Agent

Hopefully this will make up for it and I can continue to watch more of Kon's works in 2013, this time for real. Now I admit that I do like some Christmas movies (my favorite being It's a Wonderful Life) so I did expect to like this one, but I never expected what I was going to see as this isn't your typical Christmas movie.

What is it about?

Taking place from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day, Tokyo Godfathers follows three homeless people as they spend Christmas Eve getting food and looking through trash. It is then that they discover an abandoned baby in a pile of trash. Armed with only a bag that contains clue's to the baby's parents, the three decide to find the parents but face harsh obstacles along the way that conflict with not only the reason why the baby was abandoned but also facing each of their own pasts as well. Not going to go deeper in of course as this would be spoilery.

Who are our characters?

The movie follows an alcoholic old man called Gin, a transvestite named Hana and a runaway teenage girl named Miyuki. Its not exactly clear how long the three have been travelling together or even how long its been since each of them had became homeless, but they pretty much function as a sort of family with Hana as the mother, Gin as the father and Miyuki as the teenage daughter.

Much like in Paprika, I never found any flaws with these characters, they're just so likable and you want them to find baby Kiyoko's parents. Its true that they don't always get along, but they still stick by each other no matter what despite the situation they're caught up in. Its worth noting that Keiko Nobumoto who created Wolf's Rain and wrote the screenplay for Cowboy Bebop also wrote the screenplay for this movie alongside Kon which may have helped get the likability across.

How Good does it look/sound?

Once again, Satoshi Kon's visuals impress. The fluidity of his animations, once again aided by Madhouse, continue to stun me but there is a distinct difference between this and Paprika; while Paprika was colorful and disorientating much like a dream, Tokyo Godfathers is much darker and harsher. It makes sense because this is to help show just how real and gritty this is supposed to be. The backgrounds are constantly filled with bags of garbage or debris but also hard lighting and snow, its a little strange to say but its beautiful. The soundtrack was also pretty great, the composer was actually Keiichi Suzuki who did the soundtrack to several films but also one of my favourite video games of all time: Earthbound for the Super Nintendo so that was really cool.

The voice acting was also really nice. Usually I watch the English dub of an anime if its available but Tokyo Godfathers doesn't have one so I had to go with subs for this one. The voice acting is pretty great in getting across the drama or comedy in each scene across very well. Each of the main voice actors are actually pretty unknown which is a shame because I'd love to hear them in more stuff but as far as I know this is the only anime each of them have performed.

Overall

Tokyo Godfathers is another great film by Satoshi Kon. It tells a great story of miracles and family wrapped up in one package. It doesn't sugarcoat situations or talk down to it's audience either, this is truly something that any anime fan (or even if you're not a fan) can enjoy especially around this time of the year. Speaking of that, Christmas and New Year isn't exactly the focus because these events just happen to take place during then. It sort of makes it better because you can pretty much watch this anytime and you wouldn't feel too strange for doing so unlike other Christmas movies. Bottom line, you should watch Tokyo Godfathers whenever you get the chance to do so.

I hope you all enjoyed my review. I wish everybody reading and everyone at One Piece at a TimeBlog a very safe and a Merry Christmas. But if you don't celebrate Christmas then Happy Holidays. Thank you very much and see you all later.

Manga: Chapter 691 (SPOILERS!)

SPOILERS!
Get your blood pumped up with One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

Continuing from last week when Trafalgar Law CUT A MOUNTAIN IN HALF, the lab starts to collapse around everyone. The Straw Hats, the Marines and the children continue evacuating the facility but with a much bigger risk at hand.

Meanwhile in the SAD room, Law uses his powers to stick Vergo's body parts on a railing and starts to leave with Smoker. Vergo taunts Law by saying he'll regret doing this because taking down Doflamingo  will not be as easy as he thinks and even tries to get Smoker to agree with, but Law splits his head in half and tells Vergo to worry about himself instead.

Oh these poor naive soldiers

Back in R Block, the beaten down Caesar takes in the fact that his plans are being ruined and gets mad at Luffy.

Let me just take that in...ah the satisfaction but there is still more to come.

Anyway, Caesar gets so mad that he demands his men in the Secret Room to open the air vents so that the Land of the Death gas can be let in. Caesar even shows his true colors when he outright shouts at his men that he doesn't care if they die because they're expendable.

The poor men start to cry and kid themselves into believing that this is a ruse as they turn on the gas for their "kind master". As the gas fills the room, it envelops around Caesar making him bigger and powerful. Then to show off his prowess he starts petrifying his own men who are still on the verge of tears. Much like myself, Luffy gets SUPER PISSED and runs off somewhere telling Momonosuke to watch Brownbeard for him.

Those eyes...

As the men in the Secret Room watch in horror at what their Master has done, Usopp emerges from his hiding spot and asks to use the controls so he can help his friends escape. The men think that Luffy is running away though and even call him a coward but Usopp tells them to shut up and says that Luffy would never betray them despite how easy it would be. Usopp continues to say Luffy has absolute faith in his crew and thats why they risk their lives to help him since he would do the same.

The chapter ends with Usopp stating that Luffy despises people like Caesar and that he'll pay, while Luffy prepares to launch an attack on Caesar with his face displaying how pissed he is.

Usopp has come so far in the series

This is another one of those "setting up the final attack" chapters but its a good one. Its clear that this arc isn't going to finish like most of them with a party on the island because Punk Hazard will pretty much be done for by the end (unless its on the Sunny or something). Great speech from Usopp, great badassery from Law and Luffy, not much to say really.

Although whether Caesar will truly be gone after this attack, how they'll all escape and wherever Franky is are questions still on my mind but I don't think it'll take long for us to find out. Keep reading, I think we're almost done. See you all next time!

Heres some ZoroxTashigi fodder :P

Amazing how fast a year can go. One day you are reading a manga chapter where the Straw Hats are leaving Fishman Island. Later on, you are watching an anime episode where the Straw Hats are leaving Fishman Island.

A lot has happen with One Piece this year. So, let take a look at some of our favorite moments involving One Piece that has happen in 2012.

Top 3 One Piece Moments in 2012

Neku's Picks
#3: Punk Hazard Arc (SPOILERS: Highlight to read)

The current arc in the manga is closely coming to an end, while I do have some issues with it. I still enjoyed what I've read. The way the island was explored as well as the actual threat and plotting that goes on is quite different from what we've seen before and the art as always is beautiful. I want to see where this is going for Luffy and the Straw Hats in terms of their overall voyage in the New World. How this will effect the overall world? Because, as we all know by now, its impossible to keep the Straw Hats silent and that the way we like it.

Also, this will be getting animated starting next week and I want to see how Toei is going to handle this. The Japanese VA for Frieza from Dragon Ball Z is going to be Caesar Clown and that alone may make me hate him a little less. Just a little bit though. :P

#2: Meeting Chris Sabat

In March, I went to Sunny Con with my brother because I had never been to an anime convention before and we thought it would be fun. For a first con, it was really fun! I got some figures, I met with friends, the other people who went were nice too. But I also got to meet MasakoX of TeamFourStar fame, Veronica Taylor who was the original VA of Ash from Pokemon, but the most important was Chris Sabat who of course voices our own Roronoa Zoro.

I got my DVD copy of Collection Two (which had Zoro on the cover signed) and he seemed like a really nice guy. The reason this is my number two is because it was pretty personal to actually meet someone involved with one of the best anime series ever. I proudly display my copy on my shelf and I don't regret it one bit. Maybe someday I can get autographs from the other Straw Hats...

#1: Watching Season 4 Dubbed (Partly)

This might be cheating because my #1 pick from last year was experiencing One Piece in English but that was only from the first collection that Funimation had put out. Over this past year I have collected seven more DVD collections from the middle of the Baratie Arc and all the way towards the end of the G8 arc.

Needless to say, it was a blast! Because my collection was almost in full order, the only thing I had to do was to buy the brand new Season 4 sets which were released in August and October (still waiting on the 3rd DVD release and the last one is out in March next year). When I finally stuck the DVD in the player and got One Piece in English AND in widescreen, it was like a dream come true.

Everything was absolutely perfect. The VAs have gotten so good at these roles that they can practically play them in their sleeps and the new VAs for characters like Foxy or Kokoro are just SPOT ON. Its everything I wanted as a fan and I'm going to continue buying these, knowing that I'll have every episode of One Piece released in English.

Zenith's Picks (SPOILERS: Highlight to read)

 #3: Law Shenanigans
Law vs. Smoker and Law switching Smoker's body with Tashigi.

#2: The Power of Caesar Clown
Ceasar Clown taking down the strawhats without touching them.

#1: Zoro beheading a dragon.
Easily the best.

Mikey's Picks
#3: Finally Leaving Fishman Island

After being in Fishmand Island for over a year, it was nice to finally leave that place. The Fishman Island Arc was disappointing after spending several years building up to it.

We had to deal with lackluster villains who goal was as plain and boring as they were. Oda tried hard to make us care about them but seeing how fast each commander was disposed of by the Straw Hats prove that they were just not worth our time. I know Oda wanted to show how powerful the Straw Hats have gotten in the last two years but that didn't lead to satisfyingly fights. There were some good characters in the arc but I was happy to finally leave the island and the horrible characters that reside there.

Luckily for us, next year brings us the Punk Hazard Arc which will wash away the horrid taste of Fishman Island from our minds.

#2: One Piece: Season 4

It has been over a year since we last had a One Piece DVD set with new dubbed material and the wait was well worth it. Voyage 1 for One Piece Season 4 came out and people rejoiced.  The voice actors for the Straw Hats were at the top of their game. It was exciting to know that with each passing episode that we were getting closer to the much awaited Water 7 Arc.

Then we will not have to wait long for Season 5 which includes Enies Lobby because Funimation has already acquire the rights to those episodes. Until then, we get to watch Luffy duke it out against Usopp over the faith of the Merry while a mystery is afoot in the canals of Water 7 involving Robin's dark past.

#1: Shonen Jump Alpha

People have always been saying that there should be a legal way to read One Piece as it comes out in Japan. Then in late 2011, Viz announced Shonen Jump Alpha which will release translated chapters of One Piece and other Japanese Shonen Jump titles. It was two weeks behind but it was a step in the right direction.

You think it would be hard to resist the urge to go to a scanlation site to read ahead. To tell the truth, it is not. The quality is ten times better then any scanlation site. I have to replace the images that Neku uses with those from Shonen Jump Alpha and notice that SJA's are much more clearer and nicer in comparison. It is simply amazing to see that we finally got a legal way to read manga online.

Then the best just keeps getting better! Starting next month, SJA will be releasing the new chapters along side with JSJ. No more being two weeks behind. Of course, the scanlators will be releasing their chapters three days before JSJ actually hits the streets but this news is amazing. If you are not already subscribe to SJA and reading One Piece then get on it! I have already renew my subscription and can't wait for next month.

2013 Wishlist
One Piece is all about dreaming. So how about we take some time to dream about what we want to see in 2013 for One Piece.

#3: More Potential Crossovers

I love crossovers. One Piece and Toriko are practically a match made in heaven. But I want to see more and not just Toriko. I want to see more Jump characters or series combine with One Piece and create something awesome whether it be in manga or anime form. One Piece teaming up with the likes of Gintama or Hunter x Hunter, there are plenty of current shonen out there that I just want to collide with the One Piece world. Maybe some issues will get in the way but, just like with my number one pick, all I'm asking for...please?

#2: More acquisitions from Funimation
We all know that Funimation are planning to release Season 5 and the movie Strong World starting next year, but of course I want to see more. When I say more, I mean everything. I want to see the past movies being released, the recent Film Z being released, any more of the specials or OVAs and of course more seasons. I know its impossible for ALL of these things being announced next year but even if only one new season gets announced or one movie gets announced, that will be enough for me.

#1: Getting Licensed in the UK

I know I've said before and that its very unlikely at this point One Piece will ever get licensed over here but I want to stay positive for the future. Just this last year, the UK FINALLY saw the release of Dragon Ball Z on DVD in the UK. Yes, it is an inferior release but I don't care. People have been asking for YEARS and it finally happened. Manga Entertainment has shown interest in the past along with Kaze who has distributed One Piece DVDs in both Germany and France (maybe more countries) and I think the two should collaborate to bring us this brilliant series. Even if it doesn't happen for another few years, I want to believe in the UK anime industry that we will get One Piece no matter what it takes.

#2: More One Piece News
I am mostly talking about new for the US but this applies to the whole world outside of Japan. It is a given that there will be One Piece news for Japanese fans. They are who the series is being cater for. One Piece news for the US sort of a rarity. Now that we are getting Season 5 and Strong World, Funimation will most likely not focus on the series until those two things are finally being release or worked on. Viz could always announce something One Piece related such as Chapter Zero to tie in with Strong World. There are always Colorwalks to work on as well.

Am I jeasous of Japan to always have the One Piece news? Yes I am. That is why I hope that the US and other countries to have a piece of the One Piece news.

#1: Strong World

It would be amazing to get Strong World by the end of 2013. I know some people are thinking it will be coming out next year but I do not think so looking at how much Funimation has to do for One Piece. The last set of Season 4 comes out in March and it may take another year to see the end of Season 5.

That does not stop me from hoping that Strong World will be release in 2013. There are no confirm reports that it won't come out next year so hopefully 2013 will be the year.

Also, with Strong World, we get to hear the voice for Brook. That will put to rest all the predictions on which VA will play him. Brook is a fun character and seeing him dubbed will be wonderful.

So, that is it. Depending on when you read this, 2012 will have already pass and we will be in 2013. It is a brand new year filled with big things for One Piece. How about you share your favorite moments and what you wish for involving One Piece in the comments.

So, Happy New Year and for smooth sailing in 2013!

Summary
Luffy knocks out Caesar.

Team Nami, Team Law, Team Luffy and the G5 men reunite in Structure R.

Baby 5 and Buffalo arrive on Punk Hazard with orders to retrieve Caesar.

Thoughts

This one is for Neku

The arc is coming to a close soon based on how hard Luffy hit Caesar. The mad scientist must rarely fights his own battles seeing that he made the number one mistake that Logia uses make when fighting against people with Armament Haki: Do not expand your body.

And Caesar does just that which makes him an even bigger target to hit for Luffy. I bet it hurt even more when Luffy fires a giant sized attack covered in Armament Haki. It is nice to see that something mentioned a few chapters before is brought up again. It was a small detail but it applies here in the biggest way. One of Caesar's best defenses against Armament users was the ability to slip away but he made that almost impossible to do by taking in Land of the Dead.

Interesting note: Luffy's hands were covered in Land of the Dead but it had crumble off. Maybe that is a key to how to remove the poisonous gas.

The most interesting thing about this chapter is that Luffy's presence in the New World has been announced to the key players in the Black Market. This feels similar to how Luffy made himself a public image upon his raid at Enies Lobby and Alabasta. Nobody looked as if they expected Luffy to appear but he did and showed them his power on live television.  It will be interesting to see how the world will response.

One of the people watching mention "Jack" which could hint to a possible "Royal Flush" type set up in the Black Market. Could there be a Queen? A King? Another person watching looks to have connections to the media. If that is the case then the world will surely know about Luffy's revival.

I just didn't like that once again, Oda passed up another chance to show off how strong the Straw Hats have gotten. Usopp introduce a new weapon and had dealt with the crones off screen. We could have seen what this new weapon could do and how it was different from normal Black Kabuto. We see that it has a plant on it but that is it. The weapon does look like an unnecessary addition to Usopp's arsenal but maybe it wouldn't if Oda had gave it some screen time.

Lastly, we are getting something that looks similar to the end of Thriller Bark with Baby 5 and Buffalo. They may not be Kuma but they do look powerful enough to cause some trouble and especially if they want to retrieve Caesar. If he is brought back to Doflamingo then the status quo will remain the same. General Franky is going to get a serious test soon enough and it maybe the only thing in keep Caesar out of Doflamingo's hands.

At least we know what Franky has been up to.

It looks as if we have reached the climax for the arc as Luffy has dealt the finishing blow to Caesar. Still, that doesn't mean the arc is about to be over as it looks like we will have extended action like we did at the end of Thriller Bark. It will be interesting to see what Baby 5 and Buffalo will do and Franky as General Franky thrown into the mix.

Until next time true believers!

Another one for Neku

Anime: Punk Hazard Arc- Episode 579

Sailing away from this season’s filler the anime is back on track with the new Arc; Punk Hazard. Because this is my first post I'm going to also pack in a few thoughts and observations I've made over the years. Reader beware?

In my opinion arc starters follow a pattern, actually a lot of the episodes and manga chapters do.

  •  Luffy sees something interesting and wants to keep/explore it or possibly broke it.
  •  Much of the crew is freaked out by whatever it is. Normally Chopper, Usopp, Nami, and Brook.
  •  The crew is forced to comply with Luffy’s wishes and splits up.
  •  Someone’s in danger and needs help.
  •  Food is normally involved somehow.
*Unless one of the crew members is kidnapped or runs away. Here’s looking at you Robin and Nami.

Now because of which over time the dialog and all around plot of these episodes tend to be repetitive, but considering One Piece as a whole is much like a RPG game it’s to be expected. After all this time I can’t help but to be disappointed with the fact that the crew has had two years to develop and yet their reactions have become routine. I guess I can’t blame Oda for not wanting to change the heart of his characters, if it isn’t broken then why fix it? Seems to be the idea here. Given the fact One Piece has some of the coolest characterization in Shonen, I find this to be forgivable.

Main Idea
Back to the episode, and spoiler free for the non-manga reader. Out of the Panz and into the fire as they say Punk Hazard is a lovely bipolar island with a 4 year old government restriction, on the crew’s side we see a sea of fire and on Smoker’s side, oh yes he makes an appearance in this episode, we see a winter wonderland. Luffy drags his crew into the fire to answer a distress signal Via DenDen Moshi from a location which is supposed to be cold. But while being on the fire and brimstone side of the Island they won’t be helping anyone.

There is quite a bit of establishment in this episode for the arc; Samurai are mentioned, the crew is split in two with Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Robin exploring the island and the rest on ship guard duty. Smoker and his party will be obvious subjects in this Arc once Smoker decides to pay a visit to Punk Hazard with his obsession in hunting Luffy down.

Impressions
My personal favorite moments in this episode would be Robin feeding Luffy, animated Luffy and Zoro stripping~ (No stripping Sanji is disappointing but he’s too used to the heat anyways.)  But I find the moments when the crew members are intimate to be my favorites. There really aren’t enough of them considering they all live on a ship together yet you can sometimes forget how long they’ve been together and how close they are. Quite frankly we need more of them, mostly with Franky, at the moment he’s simply that big lego robot that just watches the ship while the crew has fun. Personally, I find his new design so annoying I really don’t mind not seeing him, but I really want to like him! Help me out Oda!

Well.. Someone has to watch Sunny.

The episode concludes with a cliffhanger, leaving the rescue team in eminent danger of an unnamed mythical creature. Because you know if it’s enough to freak out Robin, it’s something big. None the less, the episode hasn’t introduced any new characters, only a new setting with the promise of screen time for old favorites (Smoker) but nothing that can’t be summed up in the lengthy episode recaps. A new year, a new arc, a new opening would be greatly appreciated as well!

That's all for now! More adventures next time.
