Manga: Chapter 672 (SPOILERS!)

SPOILERS!
Keep your eyes on the prize! Check out One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

Following up from last week's cliffhanger, we discover the identity of the mystery man at the end of the last chapter. It turns out to be...someone we've never seen before. All we know is that his name is Vergo, he is in cahoots with Monet and has a steak on his cheek. Law tries to fight Vergo, but he is somehow paralyzed and is attacked by Vergo with a bamboo pole imbued with a mysterious power.

Meanwhile, outside the Research Facility, the Marine soldiers are shocked to see that Caesar Clown has not only defeated Luffy, but also Robin, Franky, Smoker, and Tashigi. On top of that, he didn't even touch them! Caesar orders his Centaur Patrol to tie up the five. Caesar also orders the patrol to ignore the Marines and head inside the research facility, as he will protect them from the raining slime no doubt to keep his good image in the eyes of his men. I really don't understand why Caesar didn't just kill them, he had the perfect opportunity. Maybe he's still set on experimenting on them, but thats the only reason I can think of.

Well that was disappointing.

At the center lake, Brook tries to fight the slime blobs but isn't getting anywhere due to the poisonous gas they spew out. At least Zoro has some patience. Kinemon cries out in pain, while Sanji swims deeper under the lake surrounded by icy, poisonous water. Even when he's in Nami body, Sanji continues to regain his manliness. Sanji tries using his Observation Haki but doesn't find Kinemon's torso...until he sees said torso caught in the mouth of a shark. Sanji manages to take out the shark pretty fast though and catches the torso. Sanji uses Blue Walk and reaches above the surface just in time before the poison closes around him. Why do I have a feeling that before this arc ends, Sanji is going to get the snot beaten out of him by Nami?

Now that his body is fully assembled once again, Kinemon formally introduces himself to Brook, Sanji, and Zoro. He expresses both his thanks to Sanji as well as apologies for his earlier behaviour. This isn't the time for tears though, as the slime has surrounded everybody since Brook and Zoro couldn't do anything to stop it. Kinemon steps up to the plate and says that he can burn the blobs with his sword. As he slashes one of the blobs, a massive explosion occurs just like what happened a few chapters ago. However, they manage to survive since not only does Kinemon's sword style allow him to cut with fire, but it can also cut through fire itself. Okay its official, Kinemon has quickly become my favourite character of this arc. Apparantly Zoro seems to think the same as me, as the chapter ends with him stating that he shall help Kinemon rescue his son Momonosuke since the Foxfire sword style has sparked his interest.

Sanji has gained 100 Picarats!

Well what can I say? Kinemon certainly made this chapter, but aside from him we also got another mysterious possible-villain in the form of Vergo as well as some more manliness from Sanji. Once again, Oda impresses me with the beautiful artwork not only in character designs (in this case Vergo and Kinemon) but most notably the underwater scenes with Sanji and the explosion following Kinemon's attack. I do like how this arc is progressing, going back to the introduction of Vergo, the formal introduction of Kinemon, Sanji's progression as a man, and how Kinemon's sword style is going to affect Zoro. What I didn't like was seeing Franky, Robin, Smoker and Tashigi so easily beaten by Caesar considering they're supposed to be stronger. But maybe we'll get a proper explanation for this soon.

Of course we'll also need to see what Caesar plans to do with Luffy and the others after catching them; what Nami, Usopp and Chopper are up to; as well as what exactly is Vergo's connection to Law is. I'm really looking forward to what else this arc has in store for us, so tune in next time for the Misadventures of Kinemon co-starring the Straw Hats. I'll see you all next time!

Kinemon needs to be part of the Straw Hats. Who's with me?

New anime, only at OnePieceOfficial.com. Be there, or be square, like Franky’s biceps.

First Thoughts
It is very exciting to see the first animated post-time skip fight.  Not only will the crew be able to truly show off their superior abilities, but Hody’s little declaration will not endear him to Luffy.
On a personal note, I have decided to read from chapter 610 through the current chapter in the manga. For this review however, I stopped reading when I reached the events of this episode. I am very excited to see the result of the several surprises I’ve read today, and animated to boot!

Thoughts
Infiltrate the Plaza: The Crew’s Strategy
Jinbei should have explained himself better, but at least Luffy listened after his tirade about meat.
This flashback is quite interesting, as I’m quite sure that Shirahoshi’s announcement caused the mer-people and fish-people to support Luffy’s crew over Hody’s. Jinbei’s original plan may have worked, but Shirahoshi’s information was a surefire way to assure the loyalty of the people to Luffy’s cause.
The Humor Never Ceases
Brook is still at it with the princess. Perhaps Brook gets his enthusiasm from the fact that he has no blood or nose to give him nosebleeds like Sanji.
Brook Denied
Nami takes the appropriate action, so all is well.
Flashback: How the Boys Were Saved
We now cut to the escape and rescue of Brook, Zoro, and Usopp. Brook’s new-found ability is pretty cool, though when I first saw it, I freaked out like the characters in the show. Then I wanted to smack him for being a pervert.

The Crew’s Joyous Reunion
It is a good sign that the Straw Hats aren’t worried about their eminent battle at all, and that makes me all the more excited to see their new powers in a full-scale battle.
I agree with Luffy and the rest that Shirahoshi has great strength of character. It is always best to fight prejudice through non-violent methods.

Hody Jones: Racist and Jerk
This Energy Steroid could suddenly destroy Hody’s body. If it does destroy his body, that would promote anti-steroid behavior.

Hody’s plan is disgusting, and if the Straw Hat pirates weren’t there, people could die. Also, Hody is no different than those he hates, because he coerces people who are weaker than him. That is wrong, and that is why people hate others who do that.

10 vs. 100,000
Even as this tremendous catastrophe sets into motion around them, 10 vs. 100,000, the crew all remain unconcerned.
OHKO
Luffy took care of the problem without lifting a finger. 1 vs. 50,000
Final Thoughts

Overall,  this was a solid episode. Nothing was lacking in the animation, and the plot is magnificent as usual. Luffy’s power was finally revealed to the crew, and it is impressive. Hody is unnerved, and with good reason. If there is one thing people should never do in the world of One Piece, it is claim to be the future “King of the Pirates” in front of Luffy.

Summary
Villagers plead with G5 Commodore Yarisugi to search for their missing children.

Nami and Usopp try to contain the experimented children. Caesar appears to offer the children candy.

Brook, Kinemon, Sanji, and Zoro run away from Smile. They decide to head towards the lab.

Franky, Law Luffy, Robin, Smoker, and Tashigi are held captive by Vergo.

Thoughts

The start of this chapter takes us off of Punk Hazard, to the island where the parents of the experimented children live. They are pleading to Yarisugi to search for their children one more time. It looks like the Commodore is a fine example of how vile some members of G5 are. These parents are pleading to him for help and he simply turns them away and continues to perpetuate the lie.

It also looks as if Vergo can stick more then just burger patties to his face. Other things that can be place on his face includes french fries. Makes you wish that Vergo was real so you can stick other foods on his face to see if they will stick. It makes you wonder if this is some sort of Devil Fruit ability where things are able to stick to him. It does not sound useful but Vergo was able to make it work if it got him the position of Vice Admiral. Then in the previous chapter we saw the possible hints of Armament Haki. If this does come true then it could be a deadly combination.

In case you didn't know what an Axolotl look like.

The reveals continue on as we discover that Smile was fed a Devil Fruit. It has been a while since we last saw an item embedded with a Devil Fruit. I wonder if it is easier to feed Zoan type Devil Fruits to items then the other kinds. So far all the items that have been fed Devil Fruits have been of the Zoan type.

The Devil Fruit explains why Caesar's pet was very sentient when we first encountered it. Now that it's children have been destroyed, it is being much more aggressive towards Team Zoro. That is good for the G5 men who are stuck fighting the small half that Smile was throwing a few chapters ago. The only problem is that they are leading the lizard smile beast to the lab where it wanted to be. This could lead to a bigger problem.

This takes me back.

Just by looking at this panel I immediately thought of Luffy and crew being captured at Rainbase. The similarity is almost uncanny. I laughed so hard when Robin brought that up in the same panel and the irony that now she is in the cell with them.

It looks like Caesar has some big plans even though not everybody knows them. Franky is the key to escaping but it looks like Caesar thought ahead and had him knocked out. The mad scientist must want to strip Franky of the laser technology so he could be out for a while.

Still, the biggest reveal was the identity of Joker being Doflamingo. That name is very fitting considering the character. He clearly has his hands into deep things by the looks of it. He has men within the World Government, Marines, and Pirates. This explain why Law's jolly roger looks similar to Doflamingo.

The best part about all of this is that Doflamingo is most likely doing this for profit. He does not wish to take over the world or do something world changing. He simply wants to make a buck and is willing to play both sides to get what he wants. Doflamingo sounds like the guy who is willing to lead both sides to war and then supply them with goods all in the name of profit. He does not care who wins or loses as long as he comes out on top in the end.

I am liking where this arc is going. We are seeing how the Warlords are becoming important to the story. Then we have Caesar and his sinister slime causing havoc outside. Now we see what Vergo and his men will do on the inside.

Until next time true believers!

SPOILERS!
Whats' better than candy? Reading One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

Continuing from last week, Caesar Clown has confronted Nami and Usopp outside the remains of the destroyed labs. Caesar mockingly asks them about releasing the children since they're suffering without their candy, but Nami calls out on his rubbish since all the children really want is to go home and back to their parents. But the drug induced kids don't seem to agree and attack the two for getting in their way. Have I mentioned that I find these kids disturbing? Usopp tries to fight back but Nami stops him since its the candy thats causing their violent behavior. The kids that were chained up manage to break free, so Usopp tries using his Firebird Star (probably my favourite Usopp attack) to try and make Caesar explode due to his gas powers. But it doesn't work since he put out the fire by removing the oxygen and then he decides to take the oxygen away from Usopp and Nami just like what he did with Luffy, Robin and Franky.
AH! I miss this attack!

While the two are struggling to breathe the children gather around Caesar and begging for candy, he says he'll only give them some if they kill Nami and Usopp by crushing them with pipes. Talk about overkill. Lucky for them though, they're saved unexpectedly by Brownbeard who's still alive! I can't say I expected that. Naturally he's furious since his trusted master ordered the Cool Brothers to kill him and tries to attack him with no avail, although Nami and Usopp are able to breath again. Caesar tells the kids to escape on his Flying Gas Balloon while Usopp and Nami follow them. Brownbeard says that he doesn't care about his deception but he won't let Caesar do the same to his fellow centaurs, but Caesar just puts him down by calling him and his brethren trash and idiotic.

Brownbeard attacks in rage but Caesar uses his Gastanet attack and supposedly kills him....again. I believe that Brownbeard has definitely redeemed his character by looking out for his men, he is really not the same person we saw in the Post-War arc or even at the beginning of this arc. I don't think hes dead because we never see his body but who knows? Anyway, Caesar causes another explosion closer to Usopp and Nami so they're out of commission for now.

Now this is a kodak moment

Aboard the Flying Gas Balloon, Caesar reports his recovery of the children to Monet and asks about preparations of bait for Smiley the slime...lizard...thing. Caesar then contacts various illegal brokers telling them about the poisonous gas weapon that he shall show them since its something that the World Government would never be able to create. Among the brokers are Tamago and Pekoms from the Big Mom Pirates and most notably, Eustass Captain Kid who makes his first appearance post-timeskip, albeit silhouetted. I've seen an illustration from Oda showing off all of the Supernovas post-timeskip so I've seen what Kid looks like (not much different but still cool) but it'll be better once we see it in the manga itself. The chapter ends with Kid saying that hes not interested in weapons that cause mass destruction but knowing about it wouldn't hurt anyway.

Oh Oda you lovable tease!

This chapter was...okay. Its nice to see a chapter focused on Nami and Usopp both standing up for how immoral taking the kids away and drugging them was, even though they were helpless at the hands of Caesar Clown in the end. Hes taken down 5 of the Straw Hats so far, so we may have to rely on either Chopper or Zoro's group to help out Luffy and the others. Also I'm curious as to what Caesar's destructive weapon is and what he's planning with his pet Smiley. Maybe its just me but I think my only complaint is that, it didn't feel like a lot was done in this chapter but this is kind of typical for each arc when its building up to something so perhaps next week will be a bit better. Thats all I have to say for this week, let me know what you thought by posting a comment and I'll see you all next time!

Doesn't Caesar Clown remind you of this guy?

Summary
In the coverstory Caribou captures mermaids at Fishman Island.

The experimented children are returned to Caesar's lab.

Caesar tells the brokers more about Smile and "The Land of the Dead" weapon.

Brook, Kinemon, Sanji and Zoro finds a giant piece of "Candy".

Thoughts
 That is scary.

The chapter opens up with the kids being returned to Caesar's lab. These kids' story keeps getting more and more depressing the more we see of them. They have been drugged and condition to believe that Caesar and his candy are good for them. They keep getting worse with each passing chapter. It is becoming sickening to watch the kids in this state where they are dependent on a drug. Oda has been doing a great job in showing us the effects of the drugs on the children. It has been scary to watch the transformation from innocent children to rabid drug addicts.

The moment that Mocha started to question what was going on made me feel so happy.  Hopefully things will pick up from here now that she is beginning to have second thoughts.

In the Control Room, we get more details about how Caesar and Vergo were able to subdue Law. The Surgeon of Death's life is literally in their hands. It is interesting to know that Monet was used in this power balance between Caesar and Law. There's more to her than meets the eye. Monet may be a simple secretary, but she looks to hold a great deal of power within Punk Hazard's order of operations. This little birdy could be tricky to pin down later on in the arc once things get serious.

I wonder what is going though Franky's head. He is being pretty quiet during the chapter.

Lastly, we have Team Zoro and Team Nami on different parts of the island. It looks like if there is any hope in ruining Caesar's show then it would be Team Zoro. That is if Smile hasn't already done that by making the scientist look like a fool on the video feed.

Looking the fool

Team Zoro are in the right position and they have the power. The question is if do they have the ability to stop the slime monster. Though who knows what kind of effect the Candy will have on Smile. The men ran away right when Smile arrived and Team Zoro looks as if they want to avoid the slime monster.

Team Nami looks as if they are too far to do any real help but that could always change. Right now they are off Caesar's radar because he is confident of their demise. Maybe they will be the surprise underdog team that will turn the tide.

Nami beginning to like this set up?

It was good that Mocha came to her senses and remembered what Nami and Usopp had said to her concerning the lab. This may actually be the "monkey wrench" that needs to be thrown into Caesar's plan. So far things have been going too smoothly for Caesar with him capturing Team Luffy, getting the upper hand on Law, and putting Smoker under his thumb. I know this is simply build up for when Luffy finally defeats Caesar but things are going too good for Caesar right now.

That is of course, if Kid does not come in and decide to rock Caesar's world. He was not mentioned in this chapter but he could be the wild card in this whole mix.

 Obligatory Law Image

We are getting a lot of new players added to the game and our favorite ones are stuck behind bars or in the snow. Caesar is talking to the brokers and making himself feel better. I think I am about ready to see Luffy and crew kick some butt. Something has to happen because Caesar is getting too big for himself and needs to be brought back to reality. The question is who will do it?

Til next time true believers!

The world! What a glorious place! Seek freedom and it will lie stretched out before your eyes. If the endless dream guides your restless spirit Seize it! Raise your flag and stand tall!

I feel as if these words best describes the idea for this site. Everybody on this site has a dream that guides us towards something glorious. It has been three years since I have raised our flag and I am happy to say that we are still heading towards that dream. A dream where One Piece fans can have a site where they can talk about the series they love.

Another year has passed and this site is still going. I have to admit that the past year has been a rough one. The anime reviews has dropped to almost nothing and we have been late on manga reviews. I have not gone into too much into detail as to why. All I can say is that a mix of real life and site side things has happen. Even with those things happening, we are still sailing along looking for a brand new world that had been hiding.

I dislike making promises because sometimes they can become empty words. You never know what will happen. Instead, I would like to thank everybody who has been here though the past year. This goes for Neku, Sora, Dsaftler, Zenith, Derek and all you readers. I simply ask that you stay with the site and keep doing your best to make the One Piece fandom strong.

We are about to head into our fourth year and this is the one that counts. Many blogs only make it to this point of their journey only to be crushed by the weight of a violent sea. We are going to sail though this storm by continuing to give you enjoyable content. We have our weekly series The History of One Piece by Zenith and you can count on us to cover each manga chapter even if it is late by a week. Things are beginning to settle and I hope this will lead to good things to come.

This year has been good so far for the US One Piece community with the release of One Piece: Season Four and the announcement of Season Five and Strong World. The fandom is strong and it is all thanks to loyal fans like you. Stay with us because we have some great things to show as we....

Interview Piece: Clint Bickham (Part 1)

$

0

Back in April, Clint Beckham took the time to have an interview with the blog. You may not have heard of him because he does not provide a voice to a character in the series. Instead, he gives the voices something to say by being an English dub scriptwriter for the series.

Beside being a scriptwriter for Funimation, Clint is a huge One Piece fan. That should be obvious as you read the interview.

Things to note before you read this interview. This interview was done back in April of 2012 so some things are out of date or may have happen already. Still, I hope you find this an interesting and educational read.

Mikey-san: Hello One Piece at a Time Readers, I am with Clint Beckham. I hope I did not mispronounce your last name.

Clint Beckham: No. That is right. Beckham.
MS: He is the writer for One Piece. He is behind all the wonderful lines you get to hear in the DVDs and all the other stuff. Now, what do you like about One Piece?

CB: I think what I like about it, and it probably the same thing that makes it so popular in Japan, is that it is an all-inclusive, all ages sort of thing. I think anyone can enjoy it. Anyone can pick it up and if you look at its fanbase. The age range is nuts. You know, its like five year olds to ninety five year olds. It was so excited, I went to Japan a couple years back, to be on a subway to see all of these salary men after work reading One Piece on the subway. And I was, "Yes!” So, it is a phenomenon. It is something that I think anyone can enjoy.

MS: And it is crazy because the author has said several times that writes a story for young men.

CB: Yeah.

MS: You have kids like ten and twelve and yet, you said, you have salary men who reading it on the subway after work.

CB: Yeah and you know it has been going on for fifteen years, or longer now. So a lot of the people who started with it are growing up with it as well. I think another thing that is really great is that it keeps getting better and better. Oda keeps improving and improving. Maybe one arc will be a little better than another but on a whole I feel that the work keeps getting more and more exciting.

MS: Do you think that is the charm of the series? Because it getting better with each arc and it appeals to a young age, that it is why adults like it as well

CB: Right. The only thing that the downside with that is that it is hard to recommend to people because there is so much. I was going to recommend the manga and I was like, “It really, really really, gets good around volume 30!” It is not like it is bad before that. It is all good but it is like a lot to ask for someone to read. I am always recommending it to people but, how many episodes are out in America? Two hundred and, I don’t know how many- Six hundred in Japan.

MS: Yeah. Six hundred in Japan.

CB: Yeah. And, I do not know what volume I’m on, 64. So it is a lot to ask someone to read.

MS: Yeah, that is a lot to catch up on. I know the hardcore fans they tried during the whole month last year, no wait, back in 2010. Right before, that whole month before he jumped into the new arc, a lot of the fans tried to read from the beginning to the time skip and I was like, “Really? You are going to read that much? I hope you do not have plans.”

CB: Right. But trust me, once you start reading it then you will be glad there is so much.

MS: Yeah. You are going to be hooked by that time you get to that once touching moment; you will want to read more and more. It is easy to marathon One Piece that way. You just want to see what happens next.

CB: Yeah.

MS: How is One Piece different from the other series you work on for Funimation?”

CB: Well, the big difference is that I jump in on it late. So it was kind of strange because in a way I’m sort of, I don’t want to say this, I am the One Piece expert (because) in that I know the whole series very well and I probably know it better than anyone else working there but I also know the least because I wasn’t familiar with the English work. So for me, I had to listen to the dub very carefully. The English dub is actually very close to the Japanese so it was easy for me to get into. I wasn’t very familiar with the English one and I never had that before.

When I work for ADVision in the past, I would always be the solo writer for a show. I wouldn’t step in but with One Piece I was stepping in late so I have to get into the stride but the pervious writers and Mike (Mcfarland) have portray the characters very very close to the original. There isn’t a whole lot of strictly American things about it so it was really easy for me to get into the flow. It was still a little strange at first.

MS: You have to work with what you know already and mesh with what you are learning.

CB: Right.

MS: Does knowing so much about One Piece from the Japanese side help you out a lot when writing new script for the series?

CB: Yeah. It does every once in a while because sometimes they will throw out a line that if somebody else was working on, they wouldn’t understand the significance of it. Like…I am trying to think….The first time Robin meets Bluno. All he says is “CP9” and so I wrote a bunch of different variations of that because I don’t remember if it was CP9 or not in the Japanese. The American, the Viz adaptation, was “I’m with CP9.” We were like, “Do we want to make it that straight forward or do we want to make it that vague?”

And so when it comes things like that means something later, it’s very handy. Certain characters writing them, I am just now about to get to Franky and when Franky is first introduced he was a little bit different. He is wearing the mask and they made him seem like a villain. So you have to play and think in terms of what will the viewer going to feel about this character when they first see him but also knowing Franky what he is really like.

MS: You are right. You mention that, he is thought as a very serious but later one when you get to Ennis Lobby you are, “Is this? What happen to this serious character?”

CB: Yeah. He gets really goofy. So yeah, you kind of have to think about things like that.

MS: Does reading the manga help you with writing a script for One Piece?

CB: Yeah. I mean, it does because I have an overview of it but one thing I have been doing, just by happy coincidence  I am friends with one of Viz’s editors so he has sent me a lot of their books because like I said I wasn’t very familiar with the English version. So, I even physically have the books open in front of me as I am doing it because there is always that question of “How did they adapt this?” Like, it can be translated multiple ways or whatever. I’ll look at the Funimation translation and I’ll look at the Viz’s final one and I can go, “Oh! You know. Actually, I like the way they did this” or “Oh, I don’t like the way they did this”. Things like that. I try not to mix it up too much because when they have an official something then you want to stick with that.

MS: Yeah. You want to stick with what they have.

CB: Right but that really odd because there are so many things. Then I have to check online that I know the Japanese version like Den Den Mushi is Transponder Snail in English. I had no clue. Little things like that I have to keep looking things up.

MS: You have to make sure if it is Den Den Mushi or something else.

CB: Right. I have all the volumes in Japanese but that doesn’t do me a lot of good sometimes.

MS: Can you read Japanese?

CB: Yeah. I am not- I do not want to profess I am fluent or anything like that. I am good enough to read One Piece.

(Laughter)

MS: That’s good.

CB: Fair enough, I can read Shonen Jump.

I hope you like this part of the interview with scriptwriter, Clint Beckham. Make sure you keep your eye on the site for the second half of the interview.

History Of One Piece: Announcement 2

Hello everyone, this is Zenithwillrule and I wanted to give a few brief announcements about History Of One Piece.

First of all, I am sorry that there was no HOOP last week. I had just started work at my new job, which took away half of my week, my final college classes were starting, and on top of everything I lost my internet connection for 2 days straight. I was able to script the episode but I couldn't do much else. I have changed my editing schedule to allow me more time to work on each episode and still go to work and school but this also means there will be a few changes.

From now on, History Of One Piece will only come out every other week. This is mostly due to my current work schedule. Again I apologize but I do think this will help give me more time to streamline the recap episodes and put more analysis into the overview episodes. This may change if I go on vacation or at the end of December when classes end. I hope that you can be patient with me. History Of One Piece is something I am very passionate about but it does take time to make.

There will be a HOOP episode this week and next week but there are two small changes. This weeks episode will come out on Wednesday. This is only due to the fact that I have been working on the first episode of Anime Observations at the same time. I have worked out my schedule so that this doesn't interfere with HOOP again. So, this week's episode will be released on Wednesday, the next episode will be released the following Monday, and from then on the series will be released every other week.

Thank you very much for all of your support and I hope you understand,

SPOILERS!
Are you brazen enough? Read One Piece each week on SJAlpha!

Picking up from last week, Smiley the Slime ate the giant piece of candy laid out by Caesar Clown. Smiley then begins to be "reborn". Bubbles and gas shed from Smiley, so naturally Zoro, Sanji, Brook, and Kinemon (as well as some of Caesar's men) begin to run away from it. On the abandoned sled is a bag of apples. As Smiley's gas envelops the apples, one of them...turns into a Devil Fruit.

WOW! I really didn't see this coming! Oda, what are you up to? Smiley absorbs the bag and turns into a massive cloud of toxic gas. One unlucky guy gets caught by the gas and is encased in something that looks like ashes. Needless to say, it is terrifying. Caesar yucks it up some more because his weapon 'Land of the Dead', is considered a success. The prisoners, as well as the brokers, witness all of Caesar's men being petrified by the gas. Again, very creepy.

Seriously, my jaw dropped when this happened!

In front of Caesar's lab, the G5 marines notice the gas approaching them and realize it would soon envelop the whole island. Meanwhile, Zoro and the others continue to run like the wind from the gas. They spot the dragon that was carrying the sled from before. Zoro wants to catch it because they could use it to get away from the gas.

Back in the cage, Luffy and the others watch Zoro's group run away on the monitor. Caesar takes this moment to gloat, claiming that no-one will survive and literally become a land of the dead. The cage starts tipping backwards. Chopper watches from a distance and wants to help but a piece of paper gets thrown at him from somewhere telling him not to do anything. I have no idea who could've thrown the message but for some reason, my money is on Monet redeeming herself. Just a guess mind you.

WHO DID THAT TO MY CHOPPY?!

We see that the cage was being carried outside by a crane. Everyone pretty much in doubt that they'll escape from the cage but Law isn't giving up that easily. The chapter ends with him saying to Luffy that they're going to launch a counter attack.

Obviously, the big revelation in this chapter is the idea of Devil Fruit regeneration since Smiley died to become the gas weapon 'Land of the Dead'. I really like this idea and it makes me wonder who will show up with Devil Fruit powers the same as characters who have died in the series. Aside from this revelation, the rest of the chapter was just okay. Although it was very well drawn as always, it felt like another chapter where it was setting up for the inevitable counterattack against Caesar.

Badass Law moment #74

That about wraps up all I have to say this week. I'm fairly certain that the story will pick up again once the counter attack commences, as well as other points like switching hearts back and the business with Kinemon's son. I'm looking forward to all of it. Remember, an apple a day keeps the...ah, never mind.

Cue the Benny Hill theme!

SPOILERS

You should already know that One Piece is just that good on SJ Alpha.

Summary
Jimbei confronts Caribou.

A meeting is arranged between Hawkins, Apoo and Kid's crews to form an alliance.

Team Luffy, Smoker and Tashigi break free of their imprisonment.

The Straw Hats, G5 Men, Kiemon and Brownbeard reunite inside Caesar's lab.

Thoughts
This chapter starts off with Kid, as we see where his real place is in the arc. Kid has invited Apoo and Hawkins to his hideout to form an alliance. This meeting of powers feels similar to some of the overarching plots we have gotten in the past. It is clear that whatever happens between Apoo, Hawkins, and Kid will not resolve by the end of this arc but will instead play a major role later on in the story. That is if Killer can keep these three men in line.

It is interesting to note that based on what we have seen, there looks to be a strong parallel to Kid and Killer with Luffy and Zoro. Both Kid and Luffy are hotheaded and are quick to act when provoked.  Killer and Zoro look to be the levelheaded side of the that keeps their captains from making reckless decisions. They may not hold a named position on the crew but both of them do act like first mates. The two captains still do reckless things but their 'first mates' keep them tamed when the situation calls for it.

There is nothing much for me to say about this chapter. It was funny and set our heroes up for some action. The best part is that it was all in One Piece style. You got your humor with Luffy giving Law a headache due to his escape from the cage and Sanji grabbing Nami's bust for a boost in speed.

I do admit that it felt a bit cheap that Law just happen to get the handcuffs that were not made out of sea-prism stone. What Law did would have been more believable if everybody else didn't have sea-prism stone cuffs as well. Then again, maybe they didn't and he simply use his powers to swap them to keep them from using their abilities in the cell. If anything, it was most likely Law who gave that note to Chopper in the previous chapter.

Things are picking up in this chapter as we are reaching a clash between the Straw Hats, G5 Troops, and Caesar's group. Then in the background you have Kid making an alliance with two other Supernovas. These two things may not cross paths in the near future but you know who will: Luffy and Caesar. The crew is back together and we are passed the point where the Straw Hats get defeated in the arc. Now it is time for some butts to be kicked and awesome to be made.

Til next time true believers.
